Themes Team Projects for Contributor Day

In addition to reviewing themes for inclusion in the Theme Directory, the themes team also helps to create and maintain default themes as well as assisting with the adoption of Block Themes in the broader community. The Twenty Twenty Three theme is a block theme that will do everything that a theme should do in a minimal and unobtrusive way. What will set it apart from previous default themes will be a number of bundled “style variations” that will make it possible to change the look and feel of the theme simply by selecting from a number of community submitted style variations.

A call for submissions was made for style variations for the Twenty Twenty Three theme. These submissions will be curated and the selected designs will be included with WordPress 6.1. The contributor day focus for the Themes team at WCUS 2022 will be to review submissions and work toward converting submitted design concepts to variations as well as testing completed variations.

Some of what you we hope to accomplish:

  • Set up a local development environment with Twenty Twenty Three and the tools to create and test style variations.
  • A brief review of Block Themes and Style Variations
  • A review of accessing and navigating the Twenty Twenty Three GitHub Repository
  • Identifying variation submissions for further development
  • Creating Issues and participating in the discussion on specific variation submission issues in GitHub
  • Creating a new style variation either from submitted designs or as original contributions
  • Identify challenges faced in the process to share back to the core teams
