Everything You Need to Know for Contributor Day!

WordCamp US 2023 kicks off tomorrow, Thursday, August 24, starting with Contributor Day! We can’t wait to see you there.

Didn’t sign up for Contributor Day? No problem! Everyone is welcome to attend WCUS Contributor Day, whether or not you signed up in advance, and whether or not you have a ticket for WordCamp US! (If you did sign up, thank you! This helps our organizers and teams plan for the day).

Read on for everything you need to know for Contributor Day. If you are a Contributor Day Table Lead, please be sure to read the final section of this page.

8:30 am: New Contributor Orientation

New contributors to the WordPress open source project should plan to arrive to Woodrow Wilson A room (on the Hotel Ballroom Level of the Gaylord Resort and Conference Center) by 8:30 am, for a one-hour orientation to contributing to WordPress, from 8:30-9:30 am.

During this orientation, participants will learn about the two dozen teams that form the WordPress open source project and how you can contribute to those teams. Participants will also receive help signing up for a wordpress.org account and a Making WordPress Slack account – two essential tools for communicating within the WordPress project.

Returning contributors are welcome to attend this orientation too – the more the merrier.

9:30 am: Returning Contributors Get Started

As they arrive, returning Contributors can stop at the Woodrow Wilson registration desk to grab a name tag (a handwritten name tag or your WCUS badge, when it’s ready) and immediately find their team tables to get started contributing!

Green and Purple Bandanas

Most teams will have one or more person designated as a Table Lead, to guide that team’s contributors for the day. Some teams will also have a designated Onboarding Lead, whose role is to help people onboard as new contributors to that team. Onboarding Leads will wear a green bandana and Table Leads will wear a purple bandana, so you can easily find them.

What’s Different This Year

Returning contributors may notice that this year’s WCUS Contributor Day is a bit different than others. We’re experimenting, in an effort to bring you the best possible Contributor Day experience! Here are some things that are different:

  • A dedicated one-hour orientation for new contributors to WordPress
  • Teams are spread out across multiple rooms, to allow for more focused collaboration within teams
  • No group kick-off or closing; instead, as returning contributors arrive at the beginning of the day (9:30), they will find their teams and begin contributing right away. At the end of the day, teams will hold their own wrap-ups within their respective rooms.
  • New role: Team Onboarding Lead. This role helps onboard new contributors to their team (they are wearing green bandanas).
  • Team Table Leads and Onboarding Leads are identifiable by their purple and green bandanas, respectively.

More Information

Important Information for Table Leads

Please arrive at the Woodrow Wilson Registration Desk at 8:30 am to check in with the Contributor Day organizers and receive the following:

  • A bandana for each Table Lead and/or Onboarding Lead (purple bandana for Table Leads, green bandana for Onboarding Leads), so that you’re easily identifiable as a table lead. You can wear this bandana however you want!
  • Table Cards with your team name
  • Room Assignment
  • Name tag (handwritten)
  • Optional: Flip chart and markers are available, if needed.

A group photo is scheduled for 12:15 pm in front of the Cherry Blossom room, immediately preceding lunch. Please help make sure that everyone in your room makes it into the photo!
