Top 5 Tips for a First Time WordCamp US Attendee

The 2019 WordCamp US Conference has lots to offer; 3 days, 50+ sessions and the new host city, St. Louis, MO. While there’s much to be excited about, it can also become overwhelming for first-time WordCamp attendees.

We’ve outlined the most important tips to follow if you’re attending WordCamp US for the first time in St. Louis:

1. Know your transportation options

Besides ride-sharing apps, St. Louis has many transportation services to get you to and from the America’s Center Convention Complex, The Marriott St. Louis Grand, and the many restaurants/bars in downtown St. Louis.

The city’s Metro public transit system has trains and buses traveling constantly. Conveniently, there is a MetroLink (train) stop two blocks from the convention venue. For sightseeing, use Metro’s Downtown Trolley: a hop-on/hop-off bus that runs every 20 minutes and stops at all of the downtown tourist hot-spots.

2. Explore St. Louis when you can

It’s always important to take in as much of the local culture wherever you go; WordCamp US is no different. When you’re not at the conference, take the time to explore St. Louis’ unique sights and sounds such as:

3. Step outside your comfort zone

You’re a first time WordCamp attendee; it’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first. However, the WordPress community is a great set of people ranging in experience. You’re a part of an incredibly diverse community, so you should take advantage of it! Introduce yourself so you can not only network but make new friends.

Accept another attendee’s offer to go to the tourist spots above. Better yet, take the initiative to invite them yourself! You’ll be glad you did by the conference’s end.

4. Attend WordFest

Formerly called the WordCamp US party, WordFest is a low-stress, highly-fun social event where you can meet fellow innovators and creators. WordFest will be held on Friday between Day 1 and Day 2. This year’s WordFest will take place at the City Museum, a museum with exhibits consisting largely of repurposed architectural and industrial objects.

Less than a mile away from the convention center, WordCampers will enjoy snacks, drinks, a 10-story slide, mosaics, and even a giant praying mantis at the event. Additionally, there’s a rooftop Ferris wheel that you can ride with that new friend you made!

5. Get excited!

While a jam-packed event, WordCamp US is something worth getting excited for. From the 50+ sessions/workshops and WordFest to exploring St. Louis’ tourist spots, there’s something for everyone at WordCamp US.
Don’t wait any longer, reserve your spot now!
