WordCamp Miami

The South Florida WordPress Community Meetup was established in early 2008 and monthly meetings have been held on in Broward and/or Miami Dade counties since. A few years ago a meetup in the West Palm Beach area was established and is also going strong. Some “WordPress Regulars” have been regularly attending meetups for years in addition to the few new people that find the meetup every month. Every meetup offers a run down of what happened recently in WordPress, fields “beginner” questions from those wanting to learn more, and addresses topics that the meetup attendees are interested in.

One of the biggest strengths in this community lies in it’s diversity – like South Florida itself, many in the community come from different backgrounds and are able to share their variety of experiences. Another strength would be that of openess and cooperation which has allowed the community to continue to grow and include younger ones in recent years.

The community gave birth to WordCamp Miami, one of the oldest, largest and longest running WordCamps (it started years before there was a WordPress Foundation and official WordCamp guidelines). It has grown from a 150 person event to over 1000 people attending annually. It has also been the home of the largest Kid’s Camp, Wapuu shirts and uno cards (both open sourced), and the birth of the “game show” (http://wpgame.show).
