What is Contributor Day?

Photo of Aaron Campbell, Contributor Day lead. Many attendees have asked, “What is Contributor Day?” As someone who is a first-time WCUS attendee, I wanted to know the answer to this question myself. Spoiler Alert: It’s much easier than I thought to get involved on Contributor Day. I spoke with Contributor Day Lead Aaron Campbell to get some more information on what contributor day is, what to expect, and how to get involved.

Jennifer Swisher: In a nutshell, what is contributor day?

Aaron Campbell: WordPress powers more than 28% of the top ten million sites on the web, but WordPress is powered by volunteer contributors. Contributor day is a day for existing contributors to work on projects together as well as for people to learn how to contribute back to WordPress for the first time.

JS: Who attends contributor day typically?

AC: There will be existing contributors and leads from nearly every contributor team as well as plenty of people interested in learning how to get involved.

JS: Is there something that all skill levels can participate in?

AC: Definitely! There are more than fifteen different groups to be involved in and each one has things for people of all different skill levels.

JS: What types of things are there for beginners to participate in?

AC: I think one of the best places for beginners to participate is in support. If you have done anything with WordPress, you can help someone else do that same thing. It also gives you a look into many different areas of WordPress and the WordPress community, giving the you the chance to see what else you might be interested in getting involved in.

JS: Do you have to understand HTML/CSS/PHP/Javascript to participate?

AC: Absolutely not! There’s no need to know how to code because there are more than 15 different areas where you can get involved!

JS: What should people bring with them to contributor day?

AC: The only thing that is required is yourself, but most people bring their laptops (or tablets) with them since there tends to be a lot of online collaboration.
