Community Track: Round 1

Community presenters photos

As we mentioned on Thursday, we are starting something new. We have a track dedicated entirely to the WordPress community.

There will be four areas that the Community Track will touch on this year:

  • Meetups
  • WordCamps
  • Diversity / Inclusion
  • Kids / Youth

We have different people active in the WordPress community leading workshops and panels. Each leader will also have a diverse team collaborating and presenting with them. Some of these team members are still being finalized, but we wanted to introduce the topics, formats, and these dears who we are calling “area captains” or moderator/emcees.

There is also a preliminary description of each topic. We are looking to hone and expand upon these descriptions when the full schedule comes out later this month.

Come back Monday and Tuesday to hear about more Community Track offerings!

Grow Your Meetup!

Format: Workshop

Preliminary Description

This workshop will cover how to grow an established meetup and will cover popular main topics:

  • Marketing: Tactics for how to grow your meetup size and how to advertise/attract potential sponsors and other surrounding meetups.
  • Formats & Creative Ideas: What formats and ideas have some meetups successfully used to avoid getting themselves into a “rut”?
  • WordCamps: How to use meetups to set up those who are interested in volunteering for organizer or speaker roles at the local WordCamp.

Area Captain: Victor Ramirez @isvictoriousss

  • Victor Ramirez

Victor Ramirez began his foray into the interwebs building websites and email newsletters for various high school art projects. He is currently a lead software engineer at Dow Jones building WordPress projects for the Wall Street Journal. On the side, he runs An Abstract Agency – a WordPress-focused marketing agency. In his free time, he teaches high school students to code & coaches professionals in New York City.

WordCamp Organization: Tools And Budget

Format: Presentation and Audience Q & A

Preliminary Description:

This session will focus on practical tips that attendees can walk away with in the form of a list of tools, software, and techniques.

This session will also focus on removing barriers for starting or running WordPress events.

Area Captain: Jenny Wong @miss_jwo

  • Jenny Wong

Once a Web Developer, Jenny now works as an Engineering Manager at Human Made. When she started, she didn’t do anything else for two weeks but organize a local conference. She is often found being an open source community evangelist, event organiser, and sometimes a speaker.

Her days vary from solving issues on event sites, supporting event organisers, loudly cheering people on to contribute back to open source, and coming up with crazy ideas to help improve participation experiences in open source projects.

If you ever find her away from her laptop, she is usually binge watching F1 & anime, doing renovations, or making a mess whilst cooking. You can find her around a messaging service making spelling mistakes.

You don’t want to miss out on WordCamp US 2019! There will be speakers, workshops, childcare, an incredible sponsor hall, the annual WordFest party, and more. Get your tickets to WordCamp US today!
