Book your room for WCUS!

We’re happy to announce that we have once again secured a select number of discounted rooms at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown for WordCamp US.

Hotel Details

The Sheraton is two blocks from the Convention Center where WCUS will take place, and within walking distance of many of the city’s major attractions, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Love Park, and the Franklin Institute.

The hotel features a fitness room, indoor swimming pool, and has a Starbucks right in the lobby. There is also a bar and restaurant located in the atrium of the hotel, which is sure to be a great place to meetup with other attendees again this year.

How to Book

To book your stay, visit this Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel page. Or call the hotel directly at (215) 448-2000 or (888) 627-8178 and reference WordCamp US 2016.

The rate is $199 per night, and the rooms can be occupied by up to four people at the same price. When booking your room this way, you’ll receive the special room rate and free in-room WiFi.

This group rate is available for booking until November 14. Room availability is limited, so reserve one as soon as you can.

Last chance to apply!

Hey, procrastinators! The deadline to apply to speak or volunteer at WordCamp US 2016 is today.

Applying to Speak

If you’re not sure if your topic is quite right, check out this post for ideas and past sessions. (Or just go for it and apply. We love to see new ideas pop up in the submissions!)

Head over to wcus-speakers.org to complete the application.

Applying to Volunteer

Volunteers are key for making WordCamps a success, and WordCamp US is extra-large so we need a bunch!

As a volunteer, you could help out at registration, assist in making sure speakers end up where they need to be, answer attendee questions, distribute swag, and lots more. (If any of the jobs sound terrible to you, don’t let that stop you. The application has a spot for you to let us know what you really don’t want to do.) Still not sure? Read more about what it’s like to volunteer at WCUS here.

Complete the application to volunteer here.

If you’re not up for speaking or volunteering, sign up to be an attendee! Tickets are available now.

What to Expect as a Volunteer at WordCamp US

Generous volunteers hold the key to the success of just about every WordCamp. To be sure, a successful WordCamp requires the combination of many factors – yet it is volunteers who often serve as the face of the conference. Volunteers welcome attendees at the registration table. Volunteers help ensure speakers are in the right room at the right time. Volunteers help attendees find where they are going.

As we look to recruit a few more volunteers for what will be one of the biggest WordCamps ever, we are often asked about what volunteers can expect. We have shared a few of those questions – and answers – below. (Please let us know via the comments of any additional questions that you may have.)

What sort of tasks do volunteers perform?

Volunteers help WordCamp US run smoothly. Here’s a short list of just some of the roles volunteers will fill:

  • They will serve at the registration table, welcoming attendees as they arrive.
  • They will distribute t-shirts and swag to attendees.
  • They will serve as room managers, guards and runners, helping keep the speaker tracks on schedule.
  • They will serve in the Happiness Bar, providing tech support to attendees.
  • They will serve as hallway monitors, answering questions, providing directions.
  • They will help welcome the teams of sponsors and help ensure that those teams get the support they need during the conference.
  • They will welcome attendees to the After Party and help everyone have a good time.

Of course, volunteers are asked to serve in a myriad of related ways, essentially performing a welcoming and ambassadorial role.

How many hours per day do I have to work as a volunteer?

That depends totally on you! As you can read on the Volunteer application form, we are asking for a minimum of four hours. Yet, there are volunteers who get a real charge of working hard all throughout the weekend. If you’re up for giving at least four hours of your time over two days, then we encourage you to sign up. If you’re all in – that’s great too!

Do I need any specific training or skills to volunteer?

You do not need any specific training to serve as a volunteer. Our volunteer on-boarding process will include an introductory video, Slack meetings with the volunteer coordinators and plenty of detailed notes. The night before and the morning of WordCamp US, volunteers will be given a tour of the convention center and will be provided with relevant updates and information about upcoming weekend.

As for skills, the only thing we require is a willing attitude and a friendly approach. Our volunteers are bloggers, developers, designers, website administrators, people just exploring WordPress – and more! We have extroverts and introverts as volunteers. We have some people who are young and others who are less so. The one trait that they are have in common is that they are all willing to work to make WordCamp US a wonderfully fun, engaging and memorable time for everyone.

If selected as a volunteer, how can I connect with fellow volunteers before WordCamp US?

In reply to a question asked over Twitter, we have the following answer, delivered over Twitter.

If I volunteer, do I still need to buy a ticket?

Nope! In exchange for helping deliver a great WordPress-focused weekend, volunteers receive free entry to WordCamp US, which also includes lunch on both days and access to the After Party. All applicants who are selected to volunteer will be sent a discount code to register to attend WordCamp US for free.

Don’t miss your chance to be an active part of a great community! Apply now to volunteer at WordCamp US 2016!

Volunteer! Volunteer! Volunteer!

We are excited to announce that we are now welcoming applications to volunteer at WordCamp US 2016. Volunteering at a WordCamp is a wonderful way to get involved with the WordPress Community, to meet new friends, connect with existing ones and have a great time.

WordPress Community Summit Update

Photo by Kari Leigh Marucchi & Sheri Bigelow

As the time for WordCamp US 2016 draws near a lot of us are scrutinizing our calendars and starting to think about travel planning. With the big event just a few months away; dates, times, travel, and lodging are all decisions that need to be made and for some of you the WordPress Community Summit will heavily influence those choices.

So it is our absolute pleasure to announce that the next WordPress Community Summit will not be hosted by WordCamp US.

The next WordPress Community Summit will be hosted by another WordCamp you all might have heard of: WordCamp Europe 2017.

We don’t have all the details in place, so consider this post a save-the-date card for those of you who are looking to attend the next Community Summit.

More details will be available in the coming months. Subscribe to WordCamp Europe 2017 and Make WordPress Community to ensure you get all the details.

Tickets are now available for WordCamp US, and speaker slots are filling up! We’ll see you December 2-4 in Philadelphia!

And then again in Paris.

WordCamp US Call for Speakers

We’re thrilled to announce that WordCamp US 2016 is officially accepting speaker applications!

The 2nd annual WordCamp US will be held in Philadelphia, PA December 2-4, 2016, bringing together WordPress enthusiasts from all areas to participate in the largest WordCamp in the world. We’re looking to build a program packed with amazing presentations which reflects the diversity of the WordPress community and we want you to be a part of it!

What We’re Looking For

WordCamp US showcases the best of WordPress and the WordPress Community. We’re particularly interested in hearing from those who have used WordPress in interesting, innovative, and significant ways. Whether the open source software was used to deliver something technically amazing or whether WordPress was the foundation for creating something meaningful in the community, we want to know about it. We’re also looking for dynamic and versatile speakers to talk about how they use WordPress to grow their business, develop advanced plugins, tell their stories, and much much more.

We also want to hear voices from outside the WordPress community. If you work on other Open Source projects or web design and development in general and think the WordPress community could benefit from your story we want it told at WCUS.

Looking for more inspiration? Check out presentations from last year’s event.

What’s happening with WordCamp US 2016?

It’s been a while since we last posted an update so it may seem as though little is going on, however we’ve been hard at work with preparations for what will be an even larger WordCamp US this year. (We expect over 3,000 attendees!)

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

  • Putting together the internal teams that work on various areas, like sponsorship, website design, marketing, and volunteer coordination.
  • Reaching out to sponsors to provide the financial support an event this size requires.
  • Improving the way speakers will be able to submit proposals.
  • Working through any issues from the 2015 event.

Be sure to sign up for email updates, or follow along on Twitter or Facebook, so you’ll be on top of all of the latest developments. (To receive email updates, just enter your email address where it says “Email Address” in the left sidebar and click “Subscribe.”)

We’ll be calling for speakers and volunteers soon!

Applications for the WordCamp US 2017 host city now open!

2017 is a year away but the planning for WordCamp US 2017 starts today! Before we can get too far in the planning process there are a few decisions that need to be made. At the very top of that list of details? We need to choose a city to host to WordCamp US in 2017 and 2018.

Is your city the perfect place to host WordCamp US? Are you willing to lead the local WordCamp US organizing team for two consecutive years?

Applications are open now through Monday, February 29, 2016.
